SEHD Documentation Center

The Society for Environment and Human Development (SEHD) runs a documentation center with special attention to environment, human rights, ethnic issues, excluded groups, social exclusion, elections and democracy, and the media.

The SEHD documentation center plays special attention to critical areas, which are less covered or not covered, highlights inequity, and arouses debate around contemporary interest and issues. It regularly provides information and ideas to development actors, human rights activists, community leaders, environmental professionals and activists, academes, students, donors, civil society groups, professionals of different disciplines, the media and the public in general. The research staff of the organization pays special attention in strengthening the center. One visiting the SEHD documentation center not only gets plenty of information on different subjects but can also consult research staff who provides practical tips and guidelines for research, reporting, documentation, filming, etc.

The resources in the documentation center are electronically catalogued (with the UNESCO-introduced CDS/ISIS program). A documentation in-charge manages the center and attends the visitors.

Who uses the SEHD documentation library? Any one. Students (including M.Phil and Ph.D), academics, research scholars of different disciplines; journalists; non-governmental organizations; indigenous peoples; international financial institutions (IFIs); donors; government agencies; environmentalists; consultants; and professionals of different disciplines [from the country and abroad] use the SEHD documentation library.

How to Access the SEHD materials? Easily! One can visit the SEHD documentation library from 9.00 am to 5.30pm, Sunday to Thursday (call to know if you can use it at any other time beyond the office hours). Visitors are allowed to use the documentation library with the help of the documentation in-charge or other staff members. There is a photocopy facility at a modest charge. The priced materials include SEHD books, magazines, documentary films, monographs, posters and view cards.

Books: The documentation center has nearly 3,000 books on the subjects classified as environment, journalism, mass media, sociology and culture, ethnic people, women, politics, human rights, economics, international financial institutions (IFIs), land, energy, water resources, development, poverty, law, education, election, prostitution/sex workers, local government, trade, computer, health, anthropology, agriculture, forestry, livestock, wildlife, fisheries, literature, geography, history, government publications, etc.

Encyclopedia: (i) Encyclopedia Britannica (with the latest yearbook); (ii) Oxford Illustrated Encyclopedia; (iii) Encyclopedia of Indian Tribes; (iv) Banglapedia; (v) Encyclopedia of Diplomacy; (vi) Encyclopedia of Land; (vii) Encyclopedia of Gender; (viii) Encyclopedia of Plants; (ix) Gender and Development Encyclopedia; (x) Encyclopedia of Law, etc.

Newspaper Clippings: From its establishment in 1994, SEHD has been clipping and preserving important news items and write-ups (from the local newspapers, magazines, and international publications) on the subjects listed below. Newspaper clippings of the SEHD documentation center are especially helpful for researchers, academics, students, and journalists. Its maintenance cost is significant. Clippings are cut from newspapers and other sources, pasted on offset papers, and preserved in files in alphabetical order. Old newspaper clippings have been preserved in packets. Two shelves are used for keeping newspaper clippings files. News clippings items will be increased according to the demand of the users.

How to Access SEHD Materials

Outsiders have easy access to the SEHD documentation center. One can use books and different kinds of materials, and have them photocopied at a modest cost. The priced materials include SEHD books, magazines, documentary films, monographs, posters, and view cards.

Users of the SEHD Documentation Center

Academic Institutions

Students of colleges and universities (including MPhil and PhD), professors, lecturers, research scholars of different faculties particularly of sociology, anthropology, international relations, public administration, journalism, geography, environment, population science, etc. regularly access SEHD materials on different issues.

Sometimes groups of students particularly of universities visit SEHD documentation center for use of materials and consultation with the SEHD staff. For example, Prof. Haroun Er Rashid of Independent University has brought batches of American students on a number of occasions to the SEHD library for orientation with SEHD work, materials and critical thinking on environment, human rights and development. Most of these students have used or bought SEHD materials. Three American students coming through the Independent University has also completed an internship with SEHD and has used numerous documents and materials on different subjects. They have also assisted SEHD research team in research, writing and editing.

Batches of students and scholars from different faculties such as international relations, public administration, and sociology of different universities have visited the SEHD documentation center for use of clippings, books and journal on diverse subjects.

Media Professionals and Organizations

 

Media organizations (both print and electronic)and journalists have been some of the major users of the SEHD documentation center. In all of its 73 training and workshops SEHD has provided books, handbooks, reporting guide, newspaper clippings, and media kits (prepared with information available at the documentation center) on diverse subjects to the media professionals and media organizations. As of June 2010 SEHD has trained approximately 1,000 journalists on basic and in-depth reporting.

Major national and local daily newspapers, news agencies, magazines, and electronic media have used SEHD information on issues such as elections, environment, ethnic communities, human rights, excluded groups with special attention to tea workers, sex workers, etc. Some of the SEHD books are very useful to editors and reporters (such as Handbook on Election Reporting, Reporting Guide, and Investigative Reports: Environment and Human Rights, books on different subjects, and documentary films).

The SEHD documentation center is a useful source of information for organizations and individuals who understand the significance of information that emerge from fact-finding missions, investigations, surveys, and research. Special Information Packages

SEHD offers special information packages to professionals, academes, journalists, communities, lobby groups, consultants, businesses, etc. Major areas in this regard include elections and election observation, forestry, indigenous peoples, international financial institutions (IFIs), NGO-business partnerships, tea industry and tea workers, sex workers, climate change, excluded communities, etc. One can access special information packages on these issues upon request. SEHD also takes special assignments for investigation and production in these areas.
